The sustainability committee hosted a composting presentation in the courtyard, complete with goats!  The goats demonstrated how old pumpkins can be broken down and repurposed as food. If you are interested in composting, ‘Turn Compost’ offers a residential service or you can start your own.

Supplies: composting bin, kitchen bin and compost accelerator.

It’s best to start with only fresh scraps until your compost gets going. Start collecting scraps in your kitchen bin and once full, dump it in your compost bin, add a little accelerator (applying intermittently after that), dried leaves and give it a spin. Compost needs greens (grass clipping, veggie scraps, coffee grounds), browns (dead leaves, branches, and twigs), air (turn your compost) and water (in case it gets dry).

It feels good to recycle, like basically making your garbage disappear. Did you know that only ~9% of plastics actually get recycled here in the U.S.?! It's best to avoid buying plastic all together. Another #funfact about recycling is that if you mix non-recyclable items with your recycling, the collectors usually throw the whole bag in the garbage :(

Be diligent about what you throw in the recycling (clean mixed paper, cardboard, cartons, aluminum cans, glass and plastics 1-7) and avoid mixing in garbage (paper or cardboard contaminated with food - pizza boxes, plastic bags, metal hangers, styrofoam, clothes or wires and cables). Check out this guide from the city of Dallas or enter your address here.

We recently invited TheraPlay for a parent workshop.  “Fine motor skills help children perform important tasks such as feeding themselves, grasping objects, and writing. The ability to accomplish self-care and everyday tasks by using fine motor skills helps a child’s self-esteem and confidence grow.  Strong fine motor skills help to prepare children for success in academics.”
